In today’s article, we review the new $1,999 USD Campfire Audio Clara, a hybrid premium IEM.
Campfire Audio
Campfire Audio has solidified its reputation as a premier brand in the portable audiophile market, boasting a dedicated following since its inception in 2015.
Notably, their Andromeda model garnered immense popularity in the past, so much so that a 2020 version was later released, alongside their other acclaimed releases like the Trifecta, Solaris, and Bonneville models. We reviewed Campfire’s Astrolith not that long ago:
CA Clara
The Campfire Audio Clara is a hybrid IEM from Campfire Audio. This model was created with Alessandro Cortini, an Italian musician and audiophile. This special collaboration resulted from a passion project between him and Ken Ball, the founder and acoustic engineer of Campfire Audio. In fact, the name Clara comes from Ken’s daughter.
Working with such an accomplished and creative artist like Alessandro has been an honor and a privilege.
In technical terms, the Clara features the newest iteration of Campfire’s hybrid IEM internal architecture. The low-end is powered by a new iteration of the Dual Magnet Dynamic Driver, while the mids are driven by the latest armature technology, with a dual-diaphragm BA. High frequencies are presented using two high-quality dedicated super-tweeters.
The Dual Magnet DD was introduced in the Cascara and Bonneville models. However, this version uses a new bio-cellulose diaphragm coupled with the tuning geometries of Clara’s housing. CA utilised Knowles’ dual-diaphragm BA for the mid-range, which is paired with the “Clear Wave” tuning chamber. The two high-frequency super tweeters are paired with Campfire’s ”Tuned Acoustic Expansion Chamber”.
In addition to the driver tech and engineering, the Clara chassis is made of resin and shaped like a custom monitor. The faceplate is finished with a classic Campfire design.
Packaging
The Campfire Audio Clara arrives in a vibrant box with a captivating, shiny design that immediately catches the eye. The packaging offers a unique, authentic aesthetic that stands out from the more conventional high-end audio presentations, making it an engaging unboxing experience.
Inside, the Clara IEMs are neatly stored in a dedicated plastic case with foam. The case indeed gives the feeling of a professional stage monitor storage. There’s also a very nice leather wallet-type case and paper bags containing various ear tips. There’s also a cleaning cloth and a tool for maintenance, ensuring the IEMs stay pristine.
In terms of cables, CA supplies both 3.5mm and 4.4mm cables in the package. These are Campfire’s premium “Time Stream” cables. Campfire even supplies a dongle DAC in the package so that the IEM can be used with smartphones and other devices. In addition, you also get classic Campfire mesh bags in the box. This is a very comprehensive and full package that suits the asking price.
Design & Build Quality
The Clara IEM’s design embodies the classic Campfire aesthetic in terms of its faceplate. However, the rest of the IEM is transparent and has CIEM vibes. Its robust build quality enhances this professional yet slick style combination. It features a mono block inner shell and durable metal nozzles, giving it a sturdy and impressive in-hand feel.
The craftsmanship of the Clara is top-notch. The metal nozzles further elevate the design’s longevity, while the stiff MMCX connectors add a sense of reliability and ruggedness. The equally impressive cable offers excellent tensile strength and rigidity, ensuring a dependable, long-lasting audio experience.
As always, Campfire delivers impeccable build quality, and the Clara continues this tradition with its durable, eye-catching design. However, this model has a more ”pro” impression, which is nice.
Fit
Clara’s fit is another standout feature. It offers a snug, flush fit in the ear. Its ergonomic shape is ideal for extended listening sessions, showcasing Campfire’s expertise in creating comfortable IEMs over the years. Clara especially performs great in this area, as the custom IEM type design fits the ears fantastically well.
The Clara provides an impeccable fit when paired with foam tips, effectively delivering excellent isolation and sealing out external noise. Its semi-custom design ensures comfort without compromising ergonomics, while the well-designed chassis enhances the overall wearing experience. The isolation is superb for a universal monitor, approaching custom IEM levels when using foam tips. Overall, the fit is comfortable, secure, and impressive, leaving little to be desired.
