I’ve got a player (AK jr), so with $400-$600 to spend should I go for a DAC/AMP using the USB outlet or (a better) headphone amp with the headphone jack? Specifics: I might use it at times for a pre-amp. Not crazy about tube amps for my rock/blues/bluegrass/jazz listening. I listen at concert levels. 96/24 is probably adequate for my library. Strong solid clear tight bass a must (no millennial bass excess), and over-detailed treble probably not a problem with the Aeons. $200 into balanced cables seems unbalanced.
Using the AK jr DAC, The headphone amps I’m considering are: Lake People G109S or AMP RS02; Arcam rHead. Using the AK jr USB with a DAC/amp: Jotunheim or Parasound Zdac V2; or Corda Rock plus some separate DAC. All advice welcome.
