Sound Classics
The Kinera ThorKing offers a neutral sound signature with just a hint of a v-shape. Its audio quality is clear and crystal-like, showcasing excellent resolution. The standout features include well-controlled bass response, good definition, and impressive treble performance, thanks to the EST drivers. Once you acclimate to the extraordinary treble response, you’ll notice that the other frequencies are well handled, with the ThorKing performing admirably across the board.
Bass
The bass in the ThorKing IEMs is well-textured and impactful, thanks to the controlled tuning of the 10 mm driver. The low frequencies display good resolution, with a nice balance between mid-bass and sub-bass. However, it’s important to note that the mid-bass is somewhat laid back, which means it doesn’t produce a warm sound in that range. For genres like jazz, I often find the overly thick bass of many IEMs to be a deal-breaker, but the ThorKing offers a refined and controlled bass response. This tuning decision results in a bass that is refined and reference-oriented.
The ThorKing delivers a balanced and linear bass response. The driver behaves almost like a balanced armature in terms of dynamics and speed, distinguishing it from typical dynamic drivers. The tuning is smooth, flat, and neutral. The low frequencies are tight and impactful, with excellent sharpness and decay. These characteristics shine particularly when it comes to pace, rhythm, timing (PRaT). However, I prefer a bit more mid-bass for added warmth and fullness. Overall, the ThorKing’s presentation makes the sound feel spacious and roomy, benefiting from its lighter bass tuning.
Mid
ThorKing’s mid-range is characterized by a neutral, dry presentation with reference tonality. The instruments sound lifelike, and the overall presentation in this range feels very airy. There is a realistic timbre with a good definition of the instruments. The mids are centred in the soundstage and do not tend to extend much to the left or right, resulting in a pleasant perception of staging combined with an impressive treble response, which I will discuss shortly.
While the mids are slightly pushed back, they remain well-defined, smooth, and controlled in the upper frequencies. I appreciated the tonality, though it could be fuller with more weight. At times, the instruments may come across as a bit thin. The choice of source and cables could influence this, which is something I will address below.
In summary, ThorKing’s mid-range excels in technical aspects such as transparency, separation, and clarity. However, it lacks warmth and vibrancy, making it less enjoyable for specific genres. Nevertheless, this mid-range is an excellent choice for a serious, flat, reference sound.
Treble
The ThorKing’s treble quality is exceptional, with impressive detail, timbre, extension, and transparency. Although I’m not particularly drawn to treble-heavy sounds, I wanted to explore some treble-focused tracks to experience them with this model. The sparkle is satisfying, and the treble is consistently well-controlled, eliminating sibilance.
This aspect is undoubtedly the highlight of the ThorKing, and I believe it offers one of the best treble performances available at this price point. This is the perfect choice if you enjoy cymbals with a good sense of air and definition. The treble is refined and transparent, beautifully presenting nuances and intricate details.
Despite its open, airy, and detailed treble response, everything remains controlled, so there’s no need to worry about ear-piercing sounds. However, it’s worth noting that the presentation can become a bit tiring during extended listening sessions, especially when using silicone tips.
Technical Performance and Sources
The ThorKing’s sound stage is impressive in width and depth, offering outstanding layering and separation. It provides a superb, spacious feel that genuinely immerses the listener. The level of detail is among the best available at this price point, and the background is pitch black. Stereo imaging is impeccable, putting the ThorKing on par with other TOTL audio gear.
In terms of tonality, the ThorKing excels at reproducing instruments with a sense of airiness. Cymbals exhibit excellent extension, and when combined with the overall spaciousness of the IEM, they deliver a remarkable audio experience. Resolution is robust, with fantastic detail retrieval and impressive transparency, showcasing great dynamism and attack. Overall, the ThorKing demonstrates outstanding technical performance. It is refined, coherent, and well-balanced.
Warm-sounding gear is recommended for the best source pairing. One excellent example is the HiBy RS8, a highly regarded flagship device. Other good options include the Shanling M9 Plus and the Dethonray Listening M1. These high-quality, warm musical sources will enhance the performance of the ThorKing, making the sound more full-bodied and musically rich. I suggest pairing this IEM with a warm source to help it shine, particularly benefiting its mid-range.
